Rewind therapy for single-event trauma

A gentle, effective way to release what your mind can’t “just forget.”


When something frightening or overwhelming happens, your body takes over. It protects you first…and processes later. Sometimes, the memory becomes “stuck”- locked in the emotional part of the brain and replaying through:


  • Intrusive images
  • Sudden anxiety or panic
  • Nightmares
  • Feeling “on edge”
  • Avoiding reminders
  • A jolt of fear that won’t settle


If there’s one specific moment you witnessed, heard about or experienced, that your nervous system keeps revisiting, you’re not doing anything wrong. Your brain is simply trying to keep you safe.


Rewind Therapy (RT) helps that memory finally move out of the present and into the past - without making you relive the trauma.


What is rewind therapy?

Rewind is a gentle, trauma-focused method that allows the brain to reprocess a distressing memory quickly and safely. 


It works by guiding you into a calm state where the memory can be revisited from a distance -without overwhelm, without emotional flooding, and without needing to talk through every detail.


Who rewind helps most

Rewind is especially effective for single-event trauma, such as:


  • Road traffic accidents
  • Injuries
  • Medical or dental trauma
  • A frightening birth experience
  • A traumatic work incident
  • A violent or threatening encounter
  • Sudden loss or shocking news


If there is one clear event your system keeps looping, Rewind can often bring rapid relief.


How rewind works

Trauma becomes “stuck” when a memory is stored with the original panic or fear still attached.


Rewind helps your brain:


  • Step out of the survival response
  • View the memory from a safely detached perspective
  • Separate the event from the fear
  • File the memory away


The goal isn’t to erase what happened - it’s to release the fear, tension, and reactivity attached to it.


After Rewind, people often say the memory feels “neutral,” “distant,” or “like a faded photograph,” without the physical jolt or intense feelings.


Where brainspotting fits in

While Rewind is powerful and effective for single, clearly defined traumatic events, Brainspotting remains the primary modality I use, and is often the deeper, more comprehensive approach.


Brainspotting may be more appropriate when:


  • The trauma involves childhood experiences or long-term patterns
  • The memory feels complex, layered, or blurry
  • The emotional impact is deep, longstanding, or relational
  • There are multiple moments that shaped the wound
  • The body carries chronic tension, shutdown, or hypervigilance
  • You want profound, whole-system healing rather than quick symptom relief


Brainspotting reaches the places inside of you that talking, logic, or insight simply can’t touch.

It supports integration, emotional release, nervous system regulation, and the reconnection with parts of yourself that learned to hide to stay safe.


Rewind offers relief. Brainspotting offers transformation


Sometimes, we begin with Rewind to settle the nervous system, and then move into Brainspotting to address deeper layers when you're ready.

What a rewind session feels like

All my sessions are online and they are calm, private, and fully guided:


  1. We ground your nervous system so you feel safe and steady.
  2. You shift into a relaxed, focused state.
  3. I guide you through a visualisation designed to help the brain reprocess the memory without reliving it.
  4. We check in afterward to notice any shifts in your emotional or physical response.


Most people notice significant improvement in 1–3 sessions.

Everyone's experience of therapy will be unique to them and so results will vary for each individual. As with other forms of therapy, individuals may experience heightened emotions at times, and processing will continue after each session. 


Sessions are not suitable for individuals experiencing acute distress as I do not offer a crisis service.
